Laughing Stock Winery
Naramata, 2014
Two small projects for a Naramata Bench winery, one a tractor shed, the other an access stair. Who said you can’t have fun with small, simple industrial buildings?
Wedged between two access roads, one rising steeply, the other one a bit less, the tractor shed ends up being a wedge itself. The doors are made of mild steel coated with clear automotive paint to offer interesting reflections of the lake, trees, and equipment parked in front.
The existing slope at the stair was too steep to support a traditional concrete stair without significant earthworks, so a novel design was developed where steel channels cantilever from a concrete retaining wall. Associated timber screens direct views away from private areas, and bring order to a previously chaotic arrangement.
